Frederic Anthing silhouette and autograph collection, ca. 1916.

Facsimile copy produced around or before 1916 by Annette von Eckardt, an artist and copyist based in Munich, of a collection of silhouettes and autographs that was compiled by the silhouette artist and writer Frederic Anthing. The collection contains six silhouettes, of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe; August, Duke of Saxe-Gotha and Altenburg; Carl August, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach; Anna Amalia, Duchess of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach; Katharina Countess zu Stolberg; and Emily Gore. The silhouettes are embedded in watercolor illustrations by Anthing and accompanied by handwritten autograph entries by the subjects, dated 1787 to 1791. The entry by Goethe is a four-line poem composed by him for the occasion of his signing ("Es mag ganz artig seyn ... "). The other entries include a poem in French; a quotation from Shakespeare's Macbeth; and a personal message from Stolberg. The facsimiles of the silhouettes and drawings have been watercolored by Eckardt by hand. In addition, a round cut-out etching of a portrait of Goethe is affixed to the leaf bearing the entry by him. The front cover is adorned with a painted silhouette of Goethe. According to the former owner Emil Hirsch, the originals upon which Eckardt based the facsimiles were owned at the time by Mrs. Schubart-Czermak.
